The Wallabies ended their rugby series against the British & Irish Lions with a proud 22-12 win on Saturday, avoiding a 3-0 series sweep.
The match, held at Sydney’s Accor Stadium, was delayed for 40 minutes due to lightning but saw Australia play their most complete game of the tour.
Wingers Dylan Pietsch and Max Jorgensen scored tries for Australia before and after the weather delay, with Tate McDermott adding a third late in the match. Despite losing the series overall, this win was the Wallabies’ first over the Lions since 2013.
Coach Joe Schmidt praised his team’s effort, especially after a heartbreaking loss the week before. “They really earned this one,” he said.
The Lions had already won the series with victories in the first two tests but hoped to complete a clean sweep. Instead, they suffered their only defeat of their nine-match Australian tour. “The best team won today,” admitted Lions coach Andy Farrell.
