MOUNT Hagen Eagles veteran skipper and former PNG Hunter, Henry Wan, announced his retirement on Saturday.
After actively participating in the semi-professional competition for 16 years, Wan has been one of the inspirations for many youngsters in the Eagles team.
“One of my best memories throughout my 16 years of footy career that I will never forget in my life after rugby league is winning the Cup last year,” said Wan.
Being named the competition’s 2024 best player and prop of the year, Wan played a pivotal role towards their grand final win last year.
He continued his impressive form this year however the team has fallen short of making the top six after losing 10-16 to Moni Plus NCDC Port Moresby Vipers in the round 18 match at Santos National Football stadium.
“We expected a tough game, we knew Vipers are in the top six and we knew we also had a slight chance to make it through but simple errors cost us the game.”
“I got so much experience playing this game that we love, so most likely I will give back.”
“My experience I can give back to the younger ones so they can be better,” said Wan.
He took time to acknowledge every footy fan throughout the country for their support.
“This journey has to come to an end now so I am finishing off now as a happy man.”
“Thank you for all the support, especially the sponsors, board and managers, also the Lae Snax tigers for giving me the opportunity to play for them in one season, including Waghi Tumbe,” said Wan.
Making his debut with Eagles before linking up with Lae Snax Tigers, PNG Hunters (Hunter player number 31) including PNG Kumuls.
