England captain Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer bowled a terrific spell in the morning session of the fifth day’s play to get rid of Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul and Washington Sundar in quick succession and left the tourists in deep trouble. A partnership was developing between allrounders Ravindra Jadeja and Nitish Reddy when Chris Woakes struck at the stroke of lunch to all but end India’s diminishing hopes of a turnaround. Reddy became Woakes victim that reduced India to 112/8 at the close of the first session. In the second session, Jadeja found an able partner in no. 10 batter Jasprit Bumrah with the duo adding 35 runs to inject life in the contest. Bumrah then lost patience and went for a big shot that resulted in his dismissal on 5. In walked Mohammed Siraj and he dropped anchor to keep Jadeja company who peeled off a fighting half-century to wage a lone battle. However, in the third session, offspinner Shoaib Bashir poured cold water on Indian hopes as he bowled Siraj to trigger wild celebrations in the English camp.
