The UAE has often played host to several cricket matches and even hosted many tournaments as well, dating back to the 1980s. In the modern era, the UAE has also hosted ICC and franchise tournaments. Most recently, they hosted the ICC Champions Trophy, where Dubai played host for India, who had opted not to travel to Pakistan for the tournament, enabling them to play it in a hybrid model.
In addition, the UAE has also hosted the Indian Premier League during the pandemic for the 2020 and 2021 seasons as well. These two seasons saw two of the most popular franchises, Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings, win the respective editions.
