The century on Friday (June 20) against England in Leeds was a special one for Gill, as it helped him become the fifth Indian cricketer to score a century in the first Test as captain. Gill was officially appointed as India’s Test captain on May 24, 2025, but he played his first Test as India’s captain on Friday and in the third session of opening day’s play crossed the 100-run mark in style. In his first Test as India captain, the 25-year-old right-handed batter from Punjab, came out to bat at No. 4 and added more than 120 runs for the third wicket with Yashasvi Jaiswal (101).
