The San Diego Wave continued to remake their roster on Wednesday, acquiring defender Daniela Arias from Brazil’s Corinthians Femenino for an undisclosed fee and signing her to a two-year deal through 2026 with a mutual option for 2027.
Arias will not accompany the team to Saturday morning’s match against the Orlando Pride in Florida as she finalizes her move.
The 30-year-old Arias made 25 appearances last season for Corinthians, earning defender of the year honors for Brasileirão Feminino A1. Before that, she spent two seasons (2021 and ’23) in Colombia’s Liga Femenina and part of the ’22 season with Pachuca in Mexico’s Liga MX Femenil.
Arias represented Colombia at the 2024 Summer Olympics, the 2023 Women’s World Cup and the 2019 Pan American Games. She visited Snapdragon Stadium in October 2023 for an international friendly against the United States and returned last month, when Colombia captured third place at the SheBelieves Cup with a 2-1 win over Australia.
“Daniela is a proven talent with strong defensive instincts and a winning mentality,” Wave sporting director and general manager Camille Ashton said. “Her experience and presence on the backline will be a great asset to our team, and we’re excited to welcome her to San Diego.”
San Diego’s roster has taken on an international flair following the retirement of Alex Morgan and the departures of midfielder Jaedyn Shaw and Naomi Girma, all Americans. When she joins the Wave (1-0-1), the Colombian-born Arias will become the 10th international player on the roster. The club also has players from Canada, Sweden, Nigeria, France and Bosnia.
