New Wrexham signing Ryan Hardie received advice from Wayne Rooney at Plymouth Argyle which he believes has improved his game. The 28-year-old striker became the Red Dragons' first summer arrival after joining for an undisclosed fee on Monday. The Scottish forward has penned a three-year deal after Argyle were relegated from the Championship this season. Wrexham , on the other hand, are preparing to play in the second tier for the first time in 43 years after securing promotion from League One in April. Hardie brings a good goalscoring record with him to the Racecourse Ground after reaching double figures in his last four campaigns. He also scored the penalty that helped Argyle knock Liverpool out of the FA Cup in February, registering 12 goals in 40 appearances in all competitions this term. Manchester United legend Rooney was in charge of Argyle for seven months last year. The former England striker's spell as manager proved to be ill-fated as he left the club at the bottom of the Championship table in December However, Hardie has highlighted how he learnt a lot from Rooney during that time, helping him to become more clinical in front of goal. His comments will be music to the ears of Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson, as well as club co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney , as they look to compete at the next level. Speaking to the Mail towards the end of last year, Hardie revealed how Rooney advised him to "guide the ball from crosses instead of hitting them hard". He has also gave him tips about using "two-yard movements" to get away from watchful defenders. "You can see the movement that got him the success. Those suggestions have massively improved my finishing this year," Hardie said. He later opened up to PLZ Soccer about his regret over Rooney's departure. "It's unfortunate that it never worked out and we never got the results that were required," Hardie said. "But working under him and seeing the qualities he has, with his leadership skills and the way he went about things on a daily basis, it was brilliant. "Working under him as a striker, if I never learnt a few things from that then I was doing it wrong. He joined in the shooting drills, and you think you're decent at shooting, but he just takes it to another level." The former Scottish youth international started his career with Rangers as a youngster, making his professional debut in 2014. He also spent time on loan with Raith Rovers, St Mirren and Livingston during his time at Ibrox. Hardie left the Glasgow giants in 2019 to sign for Blackpool, before first joining Plymouth on loan in January 2020. He scored seven goals in 13 games as Argyle won promotion to League One. He returned on loan the following season, before signing permanently during the January transfer window. Hardie scored 74 goals in 248 games for Argyle in total, winning promotion to the Championship in 2023 and also reaching the EFL Trophy Final that same year. On signing for Wrexham, he said: "I'm delighted to get the move done, I'm really happy to get it done so early and I cannot wait to get going. To get a full pre-season will be a massive benefit, to get integrated into the squad and learn the way the manager plays and get to know everyone will be important. "The last couple of seasons, it's been good getting experience in the EFL Championship and it's experience I can lean on now. I've enjoyed playing there, and I've managed to score a few goals, so hopefully that can continue this season. "I love how family-oriented the club is, the community is all together and it really is a one-club city. Everything is to do with the football, and I'm really excited to be a part of that – I'll give everything I've got for the badge." Wrexham boss Parkinson said: "I'm delighted to welcome Ryan Hardie to the club. We're looking forward to working with him and I'm sure everyone will give him a warm welcome to the SToK Cae Ras."
