The one-time AFCON winner believes the Super Eagles were almost there but were just unlucky against the gallant Warriors from Zimbabwe in the crucial 2026 World Cup qualifier.
Former Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) winner Kenneth Omeruo has offered words of encouragement to his Super Eagles teammates following a gut-wrenching 1-1 draw against Zimbabwe in a critical 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier.
The Warriors’ late equaliser left Nigeria’s World Cup hopes teetering, but Omeruo, a key figure in the team’s 2013 AFCON triumph, believes it was more a case of misfortune than a lack of quality.

The match saw Nigeria take the lead through Victor Osimhen, who nodded in a superb cross from Ola Aina, courtesy of Tolu Arokodare’s clever hold-up play.
However, despite dominating much of the contest and spurning chances to seal the win, the Super Eagles were punished in the dying moments when Zimbabwe snatched a dramatic equaliser.
The result has left Nigeria with just seven points from six qualifying matches, six points adrift of group leaders South Africa.
Omeruo, a veteran of Nigerian football, praised his teammates’ efforts while acknowledging the sting of conceding late against the gallant Warriors.
The Nigerian defender, reflecting on the disappointing result in Uyo on Tuesday evening, took to social media to rally the squad, insisting that despite the setback, they remain on the cusp of success.
“Well done, boys… we are almost there.. unlucky with the late goal.. #Believe,” Omeruo posted on his X account, striking a tone of optimism after the Super Eagles let two crucial points slip through their fingers against a determined Zimbabwe side.
His message serves as a call to maintain faith as the team looks to regroup and reignite their faltering campaign.
With the road to the 2026 World Cup growing steeper, the defender’s words emphasises a belief that the Super Eagles are close to turning their fortunes around, if only luck can swing their way.
