We don’t want £600m ‘ride-free’ theme park on our doorstep – it’ll ruin beautiful village & we’re scared of Putin ‘link’

FURIOUS residents living near the site of a proposed £600million 'ride-free' theme park have objected to the plans. Puy du Fous, a history-inspired attraction designed to transport visitors back in time, has been named one of the world's best and has sites in France and Spain. The European company is currently eyeing up land near Junction 10 on the M40 - near Bicester, Oxfordshire. If built, it would be open between April and October and would have four villages set in different eras and 13 live shows for visitors to learn about UK history. However, the plans have divided locals - and some strongly opposed the concept. The objection has also sparked rumours about the French company and park, with suggestions that it supports Russia's attack on Ukraine and has ties to the far right. Bosses have been forced to create a 'myth busting' section on their website to clear the allegations. However, a Facebook group called 'We Want Puy du Fou UK' has formed, with many arguing it would boost the local economy and is an educational asset. Adam Goodger, from Leicestershire, is the co-founder of the Facebook group and has staunchly defended the Puy du Fou plans. He said that he has visited the site in France and says it's "unlike any theme park in the world". The history buff, who lives an hour and a quarter from the suggested site, has sympathised with people living near and understands their concerns. But he has also said that a lot of the comments in objection are "ill-informed" and has criticised people's concept of what Puy du Fou is. He told Oxford Mail: "I’d argue theme park is the wrong phrase for it entirely because when people consider the word 'theme park' they think about rides and places like Alton Towers. "Puy du Fou isn’t that. It’s some incredibly, clever and innovative ideas that bring together the history of the country they are in." Puy du Fou is the name of the Chateau in France the park was built around in 1977 by Philippe De Villiers. The company released a "mythbuster" page earlier this month after becoming aware "that a small number of local objectors have been circulating incorrect information about our project." One of the concerns was the "pollution plume" from the Ardley incinerator that "covers the site." "Cherwell District Council has statutory environmental health responsibilities and would be taking very significant measures if this claim was true," said Puy du Fou. "This myth is being circulated by a local resident who is trenchantly opposed to our project but has no relevant qualifications in the field of air pollution. "Almost comically, this mythical ‘pollution plume’ quite magically misses the three local villages but only lands on our site. "How could it possibly be in our interest to build a visitor experience where the air quality is allegedly so poor?" The suggested links to Russia, reported by The Guardian, were also denied by the company. "This is an untrue conspiracy theory purposefully being circulated to besmirch Puy du Fou," said the company. "Puy du Fou explored opening a park in Russia and were caught off guard by the rapid deterioration of the geopolitical situation in Russia and Crimea. "Quite properly we cancelled this initiative once the international sanctions regime was established. The Russia project never went beyond an outline concept." A spokesperson for Puy du Fou added: "Every day we are open, tens of thousands of visitors in two countries witness the quality and popularity of Puy du Fou’s work, as evidenced by the thousands of glowing reviews on social media, TripAdvisor, Google, Facebook etc. "Our visitors provide the best response to these negative and unfounded criticisms. A planning application for the development is set to be submitted in the summer.
