Seven school-goers were killed and 27 were injured in a tragic roof collapse at a government school in Rajasthan's Jhalawar district on Friday, with several survivors claiming their warnings were ignored by school staff. The incident occurred at 7:40 AM at the Government Upper Primary School in Piplodi village when part of the building housing Classes 6 and 7 caved in during morning prayers. "We told sir that brick pieces were falling from the ceiling, but he asked us to sit down quietly," a young survivor said. Other students reported that teachers were outside the class eating poha and ignored their pleas to be let out. "There were 30 to 40 students in the class. We saw pieces falling and begged to leave, but the teacher told us to stay inside. Then the roof came down," another student recounted. The collapse sent slabs of concrete and bricks crashing down on students. Villagers rushed to the scene, digging through rubble to rescue trapped children. Locals said they used private vehicles to take the injured to hospitals as ambulances arrived nearly 45 minutes later. The victims included children as young as six years old. Many of the injured remain in critical condition in Jhalawar hospital's ICU. Those killed were identified as Payal (12), Harish (8), Priyanka (12), Kundan (12), Kartik as well as a brother and sister -- Meena (12) and her brother Kanha (6). Following that tragedy, that could have been prevented, five school staffers have been suspended, and a high-level inquiry has been ordered. Piplodi villagers said tree roots had grown into school walls, and water seepage was common. Students had reportedly raised safety concerns earlier, but no action was taken. President Droupadi Murmu, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have expressed their condolences following the tragic incident. Meanwhile, the Rajasthan Human Rights Commission has also taken suo motu cognisance and demanded legal action and compensation.
