Welsh coach states career ambitions after returning from England

Former Wales international Scott Baldwin has revealed his career ambitions after returning from England. The ex-Ospreys hooker was defence coach at Newcastle Falcons in the English Premiership before returning to take on a role with Bridgend Ravens. He was appointed their head coach ahead of the 2024/2025 season last summer. The 36-year-old had previously spent time at Ravens as a defence coach in the 2022/2023 season, before deciding to come back to his home town. Baldwin appeared as a guest on the latest episode of BBC Scrum V's The Warm Up, with Lauren Jenkins, Richie Rees and Ellis Jenkins, and was asked by host Jenkins why he decided to return to Wales after a stint in England. "I came back for personal reasons," explained Baldwin on Scrum V. "I absolutely loved coaching in the English Premiership. It was a brilliant league and you have to have your nous about you every week. We were playing Bath at home and their back line was: Spencer, Russell, Redpath, Lawrence, the list goes on. "You had to be really selective with what you were doing and Newcastle were not operating off the same budget as the other teams, so you have to be a bit creative at times, it didn’t work regularly but I loved it." Being the head coach of a semi-professional side, Baldwin did add that it is a desire of his to return to the professional game, but he is very much enjoying his time at Brewery Field. "It is an ambition to get back into the pro game, but I am really enjoying being back at my home club and being able to shape a team I want the way rugby to be played," he added. "It’s weird as a defence coach, historically, because I actually really enjoy watching the boys make decisions in attack. The philosophy is - mistakes don’t win or lose you a game, it’s how you react to them. Encouraging the boys to make decisions, opposed to telling them what to do." Working with Baldwin at Ravens is former Cardiff Rugby boss Dai Young, former Cardiff full-back Matthew Morgan and ex-Wales star Bradley Davies. Jenkins asked Baldwin what it's like working with the trio. "Brad’s brilliant, brilliant character of the game and I think he’s what we need as well," he explained. "I’m quite serious, Matthew‘s funny, Brad‘s got the balance of both. And in terms of the mentorship, Dai has been brilliant, any questions I ask him, he’s great in that respect. He has been brilliant in terms of coming in and doing the scrum for us as well." Ravens are currently in seventh place of Super Rygbi Cymru, with 35 points. They sit in the final automatic play-off place, but Carmarthen Quins, RGC and Aberavon aren't far off the pace. Baldwin's side face Quins at Carmarthen Park on Saturday, April 12, with kick-off at 2.30pm. If you would like to watch the full episode of BBC's Scrum V 'The Warm Up', then click here.
