'We're being cheated' - Manchester United fans angered by season ticket price increase

Manchester United fans who receive pensioner discounts on season tickets have been angered by the announcement that senior concessions will now all be offered at 25 per cent off. In previous years, pensioner season tickets would be discounted by 50 per cent, but United announced prices for 2025/26 on Monday and confirmed discounts would be reduced. Senior concessions have been halved and will now be offered at 25 per cent off, instead of 50 per cent. United also confirmed the age to be eligible for a senior ticket will be moved in line with the state pension age of 66. United have increased all other season tickets by five per cent and have frozen under-16 prices, meaning supporters who receive pensioner discount have been hit hardest by the changes. Fans have expressed their anger on social media and the Manchester Evening News have been contacted by unhappy supporters. One fan emailed to criticise the changes to the pensioner discounts, explaining that their season ticket would increase by £261 for the next season. The email read: "I've just received my season ticket renewal. The headlines say increase is 5 per cent and a freeze on junior tickets. Below it states that the pensioner discount is being reduced from 50 per cent to 25 per cent. On my renewal, it means my ticket goes from £23 to £37.50. "As season ticket pensioners, we have paid full prices for decades and only received the discount once reaching 65. I've been going since 1962 and feel that we're being cheated and hidden by the PR spin. The juniors will eventually age and become full price so will be a locked in hike in a few years. "Pensioners are taking a seat that they could get full price for and would retain their discount until ill health or death. The life expectancy in the Greater Manchester area is 77.5, so it's likely a pensioner would have at most 10 to 12 years of discount after say 30 to 40 years of full price tickets. "Ineos are taking advantage of the season ticket waiting list to create an extra windfall. If we don't renew, they get full price from the waiting list. But if we renew, then they get the increase with no adverse publicity. It's another corporate knife in the soul of the club. Sad times." Club sources have said reducing senior concessions to 25 per cent will harmonise the discount for pensioners, as the historic 50 per cent concession was only given to "some" fans. The MEN have approached United for additional comment on the matter. When the season ticket rises were announced, CEO Omar Berrada provided a statement and said: "We understand that any price rise is unwelcome, especially during a period of underperformance on the pitch, and we listened carefully to the strong arguments put forward by the FAB in favour of a freeze. "However, the club has decided that it would not be right to keep prices unchanged while costs rise and the club continues to face financial issues. We have kept the increase to the lowest possible level and protected our youngest Season-Ticket holders from any rises, while ensuring the club remains financially strong enough to invest in improving the team. “Our overall strategy is to price tickets at levels that keep every seat filled for every game, maximising support for the team, and providing a variety of options for different fans, including concessions for our young and elderly supporters.”
