What athletics facilities will be upgraded if the Portland Schools bond passes
@Source: oregonlive.com
Portland voters have the chance to decide on a $1.83 billion bond this month, and while the bulk of the cost would go to rebuild or modernize Cleveland, Ida B. Wells and Jefferson high schools, a sizable amount would also go towards athletics upgrades elsewhere in the city. Currently, $79 million of the proposed bond is earmarked for athletics. Here is where that money would go: Athletic hubs The majority of the extra curricular capital funding would go to upgrade facilities at Jackson Middle School, as well as on the Marshall campus and the former Whitaker Middle School site. These properties would become hubs for PIL athletics. The Long Range Facility Plan developed by PPS states that the district is dedicated to create these athletic hubs around the city to ensure that every team has a place to play. This is due to undersized sites at high schools and the potential for athletics expansion over the coming years. “Most of the district’s high schools are on small urban sites and lack the acreage to provide the athletic facilities and fields needed to support a comprehensive high school athletics program,” the plan reads. Every hub will include: A double wide field for football, soccer, lacrosse and other field sports. The fields will also be able to be used for baseball and softball. Field lighting. Bleacher seating. Eight competition tennis courts with lighting. The district is also hoping for hub sites to include a main gymnasium and an auxiliary gymnasium. These would be multiuse sites for basketball, wrestling and other indoor sports. In the 2025 bond proposal, Jackson Middle School would get $12.78 million to install two new turf fields as well as lights and a hitting facility for baseball and softball teams. Marshall would also receive $3.4 million to put down turf and new lights. The Grant Bowl is poised to see a big upgrade, with $1.47 million dedicated to installing lights at the facility and $5.26 million for seating. The Grant Bowl was built in 2013 and had to be closed in the fall of 2023 as the turf’s lifespan had run its course. While the turf was able to be played on again in the fall of 2024, the facility still lacks stadium lights and bleacher seating. Fans in attendance at games were left to sit on the hills surrounding the field, and Grant football games that were to be in the dark had to be played at the Marshall campus. The soccer teams play the majority of home games at Delta Park. Baseball upgrades Two schools that have already gotten their rebuilds would get upgrades of their baseball and softball facilities. Roosevelt would get $10 million to put new turf down on the baseball and softball fields and build a new hitting facility. Meanwhile, Franklin would see $13.2 million for new turf on the baseball and softball fields as well as new lights and a new hitting facility. The Franklin softball team does not have a home field on campus and instead hosts teams at Erv Lind Stadium in northeast Portland. Future fixes There is also $11.4 million earmarked for replacing turf and track surfaces all over the district over the next 10 years. This includes turf fields at Wells and Franklin as soon at 2029. The Marshall campus will need field work in 2030, district officials say. The Jefferson and Franklin tracks will need to be upgraded in 2032 and the Marshall track will need to be replaced in 2033. In 2034, the fields at Roosevelt, Grant and McDaniel will need to be upgraded. Non-high school A little west of Portland on Sunset Highway, Sylvan Middle School would get $13.3 million to install a multi use turf field and new lights. The field would be used by both the school and be available for Lincoln High School activities.
