What Gyokeres Move Means For Arteta
@Source: independent.ng
There is palpable euphoria in the air among Arsenal faithful over the news that the Gunners have all, but complete the move for a lethal striker in the person of Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting CP of Portugal. It is not only Arsenal fans that are in cloud seven, and feverishly awaiting the kick-off of the sea-son next month, Liverpool fans, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City are not left out as these clubs have under-taken major shakeups aimed at putting themselves in good stead for the title chase when the season kicks off in August. Only on Friday, Bretford accept-ed Manchester United’s £65m bid for Bryan Mbeumo. The Camer-oon international could undergo a medical with the club before Ruben Amorim’s squad fly to the United States on Tuesday for their pre-season tour. Chris Sutton, Former England striker, immediately made it known to the Cameroonian that, though he did well at Brentford, but playing for Manchester United is very different. “With respect to Brentford, there is no great expectation there. At United, he will be expected to perform straightaway,” noted Sut-ton. BBCsports also added, “Mbeu-mo recorded career-best figures in the Premier League last season for virtually every attacking metric, including goals and assists, chanc-es created and touches in the oppo-sition box. “With a shot conversion rate of 23.53%, only Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah and Newcastle United’s Al-exander Isak were more clinical in front of goal.” You expect United fans to be relieved knowing that their club is moving in the right direction. Champions Liverpool are also not left out in the race to rebuild for the new season. They have signed four new players, Florian Wirtz Jeremie Frimpong, Armin Pecsi and Milos Kerkez. They are still in the market for a striker with Hugo Ekitike almost a done deal as the player has handed in a transfer request. Maiden edition of the Club World Cup winner, Chelsea, so far are the busiest in the market hav-ing secured the services of seven players since the transfer win-dow opened. Liam Delap, Estevao Willian, Dario Essugo, Mamadou Sarr, Kendry Paez, Joao Pedro and Jamie Gittens are the new arrivals at the Stamford Bridge. Three players have so far agreed to join the Gunners. They are Kepa Arrizabalaga, Martin Zubimendi and Chris-tian Norgaard. Still been awaited are Noni Madueke and Gyokeres. Gyokeres expected arrival is believed will finally solve a major issue that Arsenal have had for many seasons, lack of a world-class lethal finisher. Football.london noted that Mikel Arteta has made reference to the lack of a major goal scor-er for quite some time and did so in the summer of 2023, after a friendly victory over Barcelona. Speaking about the performance of Gabriel Jesus after the game, despite not scoring, Arteta un-veiled something about his view of the team. “If we have somebody that can score 25, 30, 40 goals, then great,” he said. “Today, Gabby didn’t score, but it’s the best Gabby that I’ve seen for months. “And the contribution from Kai [Havertz] as well, that’s why he’s playing; he’s got that quality in and around that position with Leo. We have a lot of options up front, and they’re going to have to compete between them to give me a hard time.” Now though, Arsenal do have a striker who has a record of scor-ing not just 25, not just 30, not even just 40 but more than 50 goals in a single season. Gyokeres has been Europe’s top scorer across the last two seasons, and his arrival is meant to change everything for the Gunners. In turn, this adds expectation, particularly on Arteta. His last trophy was in 2020. The club has failed to lift a piece of silverware in the last five seasons despite spending more than half a billion on players. They have, however, elevated themselves into contention for the games’ biggest honours. Reaching consistent semi-finals and three runners-up placements in the Pre-mier League. With the addition of Gyokeres and potentially five, six or even seven other players this summer, the pressure to win has never been greater. We do not know what the sea-son might look like, but Arteta now has the spearhead of his at-tack reinforced, and the squad has further depth in key areas such as the right wing, defensive midfield, and the right side of the defence. Arsenal have never been this well-equipped to take on a brand new season. While analyzing the coming of Gyokeres, football.london noted three major issues he would solve for Arsenal, noting that for many of their fans the striker is the missing piece in Arteta’s project. The medium notes that the three major problems that Gyokeres is coming in to solve. From goalscor-ing to system specifics, the solu-tions go beyond the obvious with this particular player. Finally, a striker. This is, of course, the most ob-vious one of all, as Gyokeres is fi-nally solving the problem of Arse-nal’s number nine role. For much of last season Arteta was forced to use Mikel Merino as an alternative to the injured Kai Havertz and Ga-briel Jesus. The latter remains out until the end of the year while Havertz has bulked up and looks in ex-cellent shape to try and compete with Gyokeres for the spot. There is such depth there now but the summer signing will be expected to elevate the volume of goals from the role. One thing that Gyokeres does possess is another-worldly shot from range, which can see the Swede find the back of the net from ridiculous ranges. Arsenal have lacked match winners who can produce a goal from nothing, and in Gyokeres, they have a strik-er who can not only finish smartly but also produce some spectacular goals. Only Bukayo Saka before him could truly put his name to this, with some rare moments from oth-ers. It will also be good to see how Martin Odegaard combines with his new partner, finally getting that number nine ahead of him. One of the biggest discussion points around Gyokeres is the vol-ume of penalties his goal tallies are made up with. While they all count, much of the comparisons have taken out these spot kicks to get a better understanding of the player’s potential. But Gyokeres wins many of the penalties he scores and Arse-nal will hope to benefit from that. Furthermore, Saka has missed a few in his time for club and coun-try and perhaps it is time for their new striker to take on the burden.
