What happened to Noel Edmonds' Mr Blobby theme park Crinkley Bottom
@Source: manchestereveningnews.co.uk
Across the UK even years after his retirement Mr Blobby remains a relic of the 90s. Things were different back then, in a pink and yellow spotted, whooping and googly-eyed sort of way. For fans who decided that seeing Mr Blobby on TV was just not enough Mr Blobby, they could go and visit him in his home of Crinkley Bottom in Somerset, also known as Blobbyland. The sidekick of Noel Edmonds, Mr Blobby frequently featured on Noel's House Party, and even topped the UK singles chart with the eponymous track 'Mr Blobby', SomersetLive reports . It was the height of Blobbymania, but after opening in 1994 it would be just five years before Blobbyland closed. Never miss a story with the MEN's daily Catch Up newsletter - get it in your inbox by signing up here In 2014 the site was eventually demolished, deteriorating into surreal dereliction until Mr Blobby's house came to look like Bag End had been infected by the fungus from The Last of Us. Now, as we come up to 30 years since Blobbyland opened its doors, Noel Edmonds is set to make his TV comeback, swapping the psychedelic pink of Crinkley Bottom for a Clarkson's Farm style estate. The show will follow Edmonds as he manages the 11-hectare River Haven estate, including a 17th-century pub, vineyards, and a "positivity" radio station for his pets and plants. With 25 years since the theme park shut and just over 10 since its demolition, this is a look back at the decline and fall of Blobbyland. In 1994 Mr Blobby was riding high. Regular appearances on Noel Edmonds House Party saw the chaotic pink sidekick become one of the most well-known characters in the UK. The previous year saw the eponymous single "Mr Blobby" climb to the top of the UK charts for three weeks. The UK was firmly in the grip of Blobbymania. So it was that in 1994 Crinkley Bottom, or "Blobbyland" first opened its doors in Cricket St Thomas, Somerset. It was built in the grounds of Cricket House, itself already a popular local tourist destination including an adventure park and wildlife enclosures including leopards, zebras, elephants, flamingos, and ring-tailed lemurs. This tried to give an impression of Mr Blobby's life after he clocked off from appearing on TV. Dunblobbin was built into the hillside, painted bright pink with yellow spots and a blue roof. It was encircled by a white picket fence, with windowsills decorated by plastic flowers. The front door was a favourite spot for a photo, and pulling the doorbell produced the familiar cry of "blobby! blobby! blobby!" There was of course the opportunity to meet Mr Blobby himself, as well as Mrs Blobby and Baby Blobby, the existence of whom created curious implications about Mr Blobby's private life. Blobbyland also housed a children's play area as well as a high street at Crinkley Bottom featuring a bakery and, of course, the Blobby Shop. Crinkley Bottom even featured its own public transport system, with two trains carrying visitors around the grounds and the valley. There was also an "Animals of Farthing Wood" attraction including sea lion shows, a deer park, leopards, a safari ride, and a "fun village". In 1999 Warner Leisure bought the park and grounds, spelling the end for Blobbyland as well as the wildlife attractions. But the buildings remained, and were discovered by urban explorers in 2009 in a state of disrepair. For a brief spell, it seemed that the infectious Blobbymania once again began to spread via the internet as nostalgic fans began to flock to Cricket St Thomas to get a look at the remains of Blobbyland. The site owners began making efforts to stop the visitors breaking in, even blocking an access tunnel. However, eventually the site was completely demolished in 2014, bring the age of Blobbyland to an end. Today, the site hosts an adults-only hotel.
