What happened to Sister Hilda in Call the Midwife after star makes surprise return

Call the Midwife returns to BBC One for the final episode of season 14 and as Sister Catherine prepares to take her vows and become an official member of the Order, Sister Hilda is on hand to support her. Ahead of the episode's release, the BBC shared a couple of photos of actress Fenella Woolgar reprising her role. One showed Sister Hilda looking in admiration amongst some ceremonial dresses. The second photo was of the Sister in church, surrounded by her friends including Sister Veronica (Rebecca Gethings). Sister Hilda joined the series in the 2018 Christmas special. After her role in the Women's Auxiliary Air Force during the war, she had worked as a nurse and arrived at Nonnatus House with plenty of experience. She arrived alongside Sister Frances (Ella Bruccoleri) as replacements for Sister Winifred (Victoria Yeates) and Sister Mary Cynthia (Bryony Hannah). Her strong-willed personality meant she sometimes clashed with other characters, but she was an enthusiastic team member. Here is all you need to know about why she left the series Sister Hilda left Call the Midwife in season 11 when, between the events of the train crash and the 2022 Christmas special, she was sent to the Mother House. While she was there, Mother Mildred decided Nonnatus House could manage fine without her, so she took up her midwifery work in Chichester. Her absence made extra work for Sister Frances who ended up breaking her shoulder after falling off her bike in a delivery and she too returned to the Mother House. At the time of the double exit, an insider told The Mirror: "Ella and Fenella are off doing other things now - but that doesn’t mean they won’t come back again at some point. They’ll both be missed.” Viewers did not respond well to her exit at the time, with TheAlphaKiller17 saying on Reddit: "What the hell were they doing with her exit?! They set it up in the dumbest way and wasted the natural exit in the plot. "Maybe this was just me, but when Sister Hilda and Nancy [Corrigan] were talking about which one of them should go on the train, I thought for sure that was setting up a 'what if' scenario. "I thought Nancy would either be killed or seriously injured, and Hilda would have a guilt scene where she talked about how she almost went instead and it should have been her, then Sister Julienne would say something beautifully heartwarming while making elegant hand gestures. That didn't happen. "But then they wrote Hilda off in the next freaking episode; why didn't they have that exact same dialogue but with the roles switched and then kill Hilda in the train crash? I don't understand why she disappeared with zero warning or why they set up that scene then didn't use it." After leaving Call the Midwife, the actress went on to star in the film The Choral and had main roles in The Buccaneers and The Deal. Call the Midwife is available to watch on BBC iPlayer
