What Lexi Thompson's LPGA Schedule May Look Like Amid Stunning Retirement News
@Source: newsweek.com
Lexi Thompson played in the LPGA Tour's 2025 Founders Cup last week, confirming that her retirement from golf will not be absolute. Thompson announced during the last edition of the U.S. Women's Open that the 2024 season would be her last as a full-time player.Speaking from the Bradenton Country Club, home of the Founders Cup, Thompson confirmed to Golfweek's Beth Ann Nichols that she was considering playing the Ford Championship and the JM Eagle LA Championship next, which would take her out of the LPGA Tour's three-tournament swing through Asia in the coming weeks.Tour rules do not require Thompson to make a minimum number of starts during the season to maintain her card, thanks to her Class A status. This status corresponds to players who have played in 10 tournaments or one third of the total number of official events scheduled for four consecutive seasons, a criterion Thompson comfortably meets.Her status as a former winner of the Chevron Championship gives her a lifetime spot in the field for the first major of the season. So, Thompson's LPGA Tour schedule for the next two months may look as follows: Ford Championship: March 27-30 JM Eagle LA Championship: April 17-20 Chevron Championship: April 24-27 In all likelihood, Lexi Thompson will also try to qualify for the U.S. Women's Open, which will be played May 29-June 1 at Erin Hills. Currently, Thompson qualifies by world ranking (50th), but she has until March 24 to stay in the top 75 to qualify directly. If she fails to do so, she has until May 19 to return to that group, which would also earn her a spot in the field.Given her strong chances to play at Erin Hills, it is very likely that Thompson will start in at least one of the three tournaments that take place between the Chevron Championship and the US Women's Open. Those tournaments are: Black Desert Championship: May 1-4 Mizuho Americas Open: May 8-11 Riviera Maya Open at Mayakoba: May 22-25 Thompson qualified for the KPMG Women's PGA Championship, the third major of the season, by finishing in the top 10 in 2024. The 2025 edition will be played June 19-22 at PGA Frisco, and Lexi will likely play at least one of the two tournaments leading up to it: The ShopRite LPGA Classic Presented by Acer: June 6-8 Meijier LPGA Classic for Simply Give: June 12-15 Depending on her results, she may or may not be eligible to play in the season's other two majors, the Amundi Evian Championship in July and the AIG Women's Open in August. This could influence whether Thompson decides to play more or less tournaments that time of year.Another tournament Thompson will probably be determined not to miss is the CME Group TOUR Championship in November. To earn a spot in the field, she must finish the season ranked in the top 60 in the Race to CME Globe.As for future seasons, Thompson will keep her LPGA Tour card as long as she finishes in the top 100 in the Race to CME Globe. Otherwise, her inclusion in the top 20 in career earnings (currently ranked 10th) will allow her to play, although this exemption category can only be used two times.More Golf: Patrick Reed Ace at LIV Golf Adelaide Watering Hole is Doused by Fans
