What Rutgers’ Greg Schiano said about star veteran Mohamed Toure transferring

When it came to the biggest loss his program has sustained this offseason, Greg Schiano stuck to his usual policy. The Rutgers coach declined to discuss linebacker Mohamed Toure’s decision to enter the transfer portal on Friday, the final day of the 10-day spring window, following his team’s annual spring game on Saturday. “I keep it to the guys on the team,” Schiano said. “Mo and I have a special relationship. I love the guy. But he’s gone another direction, and we’ve got a really fine football that I’m excited to coach, so that’s where I’ll stick.” Toure was expected to return to Rutgers for his seventh collegiate season after missing the 2024 campaign with a torn ACL. The injury marked the second time in three years that he missed an entire campaign due to a knee injury; he suffered a season-ending ACL tear in spring camp ahead of the 2022 season. Toure’s departure is a significant hit to the Scarlet Knights, both in their depth at linebacker and the potential high-level pass rush he was expected to contribute to. When the Pleasantville native was on the field, he was highly impactful, leading the Scarlet Knights in sacks during the 2023 and 2020 campaigns (4.5 in each year). Still, Schiano said he is “excited” about the linebackers he has at his disposal. Dariel Djabome “had a really good spring” after a “breakout year” last fall in which he started all 13 games. Moses Walker “had a really good spring,” adding to the many reps he received last fall as Toure and fellow starter Tyreem Powell dealt with injury. Abram Wright, who suffered a season-ending injury in November, is expected contribute once he returns to action. Redshirt freshmen Sam Robinson and true freshman DJ McClary each showed plenty of promise in the spring, Schiano added. “We’ll be fine,” Schiano said. The Scarlet Knights can still add another player to the room, too. The program has offered multiple prospects in the past week as Toure’s situation unfolded, and while Schiano did not definitely say Rutgers will add a linebacker transfer, he indicated the program was weighing its options. “We are always evaluating what’s in the portal, and if we feel that we can make our football team better, then we will actively get engaged with players,” Schiano said. “If there’s someone in the portal that makes us a better football team, then we’ll do everything we can to try to get them.” Thank you for relying on us to provide the journalism you can trust.
