HOUSTON, TX. -- It’s a meeting of old and new in the Big 12 today, as the Kansas Jayhawks travel to play the No. 3 Houston Cougars. Tip-off is slated for 9 p.m. Eastern on ESPN. With four players averaging double-digit points, it’s their defense that head coach Kelvin Sampson lays as the blueprint. It’s worked: They currently allow the fewest points per game in the country (58.0). Houston will also look to win their second consecutive Big 12 regular season title. That feat is something the Kansas Jayhawks would have once been able to do in their sleep. Head coach Bill Self has won 16 Big 12 conference regular season titles, the last one in 2023. But since Houston’s joined the conference, Kansas has slowly lost ground. They’ve been able to get nearly 17 points and 10 boards a contest from star Hunter Dickinson, but they’ve endured some bumps along the road that makes their road to the NCAA Tournament look a bit blurry.
