Where once-vacant industrial buildings crumbled in the no man’s land between downtown and University Circle, the Cleveland Foundation is creating a gathering place.
The MidTown Collaboration Center – the shell of which the Foundation built for $32 million next door to its headquarters – includes art, health, education, socialization and more. Tenants include the Cleveland Institute of Art, Case Western Reserve University, University Hospitals, JumpStart, Hyland Software, Black Frog Brewery, Pearl’s Kitchen and Cuyahoga Community College.
It’s open on nights and weekends, with live music and classes, studio rentals and whatever else tenants can dream up. And it’s in the neighborhood of Dave’s Market, the UH Rainbow Ahuja Center for Women & Children, the MidTown Park Tech building and the Dealer Tire headquarters.
“The first floor feels like it is your living room,” said Darcy Freedman, director of CWRU’s Mary Ann Swetland Center for Environmental Health, which has already moved in. “The space is open to anyone.”
And it’s growing. Next up will be a parking garage and a public park. Future work likely will include both commercial and residential buildings.

Juvenile justice: A committee tasked with recommending improvements to Cuyahoga County’s juvenile justice system is nearing the end of its year-long exploration and will soon share its findings. Corrections lieutenant: A corrections lieutenant for the Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s Department who collected a paycheck for two years while under investigation for sexually harassing several female subordinates has been fired, reports Kaitlin Durbin. Hughes was placed on leave March 31, 2023, pending a criminal investigation that later turned into an administrative investigation. In the two years since, he’s continued to be paid his hourly rate of $46.72, or $97,000 annually.
Rehoming pigeons: Pigeons are a nuisance and can cause a lot of damage, so Cuyahoga County is working to have them removed from county property – but humanely and with the condition that they be given a comfortable home afterward. Kaitlin Durbin reports that the county is paying the Ohio School of Falconry about $3,500 to capture about two dozen birds living in the secure loading dock area at the Justice Center, which houses the county’s jail and courthouse, and relocate them elsewhere.

Cleveland City Council is set to vote on the proposed increases.
Bradstreet bathrooms: The long-awaited public bathroom shelter at Bradstreet’s Landing in Rocky River is nearly complete, reports Cory Shaffer.
