A lack of a true power bat continues to haunt the White Sox.
With the bases loaded for the Sox in the eighth inning, they once again came up empty after pinch hitter Joshua Palacios popped up to second baseman Max Muncy to end the inning.
The White Sox were blown out in Thursday’s 8-0 loss to the A’s.
The offense is listless, at the moment. There’s not a .300 hitter in the Sox lineup and the club entered Thursday in a five-way tie for 29th place in homers (12).
Starter Davis Martin did his part to limit the A’s to four runs on eight hits over 5 1/3 innings, but the offense couldn’t muster much of anything. He allowed two homers (one in the fifth to Lawrence Butler on a cutler outside the zone, and a two-run shot in the sixth to JJ Bleday on a slider outside the zone). Overall, Martin was glad with his execution.
“It is what it is,” said Martin, who walked one batter and struck out three. “Some days that’s a pop up. Some days it’s a home run. You just live with the fact that you executed the pitch the way you wanted to and move on.”
The Sox left six nine men on base and were 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position.
“We’ve got to find a way to score runs,” manager Will Venable said. “The intent is there. These guys are practicing the right way, game planning the right way. We’re getting some guys on, we just have to cash in.”
No set catcher
Juggling two catchers is tricky at the major-league level, let alone three. The Sox don’t have to worry about three catchers at the moment as Korey Lee is still recovering from a left ankle sprain, but he seems to be moving well and improving.
For the time being, Venable will have to toggle between Edgar Quero and veteran Matt Thaiss behind the plate. He hasn’t committed to their being one consistent starter.
“I think it’s open but with the catching position, no one is going to catch everyday,” Venable said. “ou do have to be thoughtful about how you’re going to mix and match, and what that means for the battery that day and what that means for the matchup at the plate.
“You factor all those things in and make an informed decision, but we’re not going to lock into any broader roles.”
Roster moves
• The White Sox reinstated left fielder Andrew Benintendi from the 10-day injured list Thursday. He missed eight games after being placed on the IL on April 9 (retroactive to April 7) with a left adductor strain.
Benintendi was a pinch hitter for the Sox in the seventh, replacing Jacob Amaya. Venable said Benintendi will be in the lineup tomorrow, but because the A’s started lefty JP Sears and had one one available left-hander in the bullpen that it would be a good spot to use Benintendi off the bench.
“He’ll be in there [on Friday], starting,” Venable said.
• Catcher Omar Narvaez was designated for assignment. Narvaez appeared in four games with the Sox, batting .286/.400/.286.
• Outfielder Greg Jones was optioned to Triple-A.
