Pakistan cricket found itself in a fresh controversy as cricketer Haider Ali has been arrested in England over allegations of rape during the Pakistan Shaheens’ ongoing tour of the United Kingdom. In the wake of the incident, the 24-year-old, part of the A squad, has been provisionally suspended by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). The Shaheens’ UK tour, which ran from July 17 to August 6, featured two drawn three-day matches and a one-day series win (2-1). Most players have returned home except captain Saud Shakeel and Haider. Haider was arrested by Greater Manchester Police (GMP) after a complaint was filed against him on Monday. “We have arrested a 24-year-old man,” a GMP statement said. “It’s alleged that the incident occurred on Wednesday 23 July 2025 at a premises in Manchester. The man has since been bailed pending further enquiries.” Haider was arrested from the Beckenham ground during a match while the Shaheens were playing against MCSAC, reported Telecom Asia Sports. According to reports, Haider is facing the case involving a girl of Pakistani origin. The cricketer’s passport was seized by the police before releasing him on bail. A PCB spokesperson said the board will cooperate fully with the legal process and provide Haider with legal support. “We were told about this case and investigation. We have suspended Haider until the investigation is completed and will conduct our own inquiry in the UK,” a PCB spokesman said. Haider made his international debut in 2020 and has played two ODIs and 35 T20Is for Pakistan. He was previously suspended for breaching Covid-19 protocols during the 2021 Pakistan Super League. He made his international debut in Manchester – the same city where the current case has been filed against him – on September 1, 2020, against England in a T20I. The current incident has sparked memories of Pakistan’s 2010 spot-fixing scandal when Salman Butt, Mohammad Amir, and Mohammad Asif were jailed in England.
