Who Is Peter Goodwin, The Billionaire Heir At The Center Of Virginia’s Scandalous Divorce
@Source: news18.com
When it comes to high-profile divorces, few stories generate enough buzz as the split between Peter and Cara Goodwin. The billionaire heir has won a legal battle to seal his divorce case from public view but the details that have been revealed during the entire process have people talking.
An Albemarle County Circuit Court judge granted Peter’s request to seal all documents related to his divorce from Cara, a child psychologist and mother of his four children. This ruling comes ahead of an August 27 hearing in Charlottesville, where the estranged couple will face off each other over adultery, money and custody in what many are calling one of Virginia’s high-profile divorce cases.
According to the New York Post, Cara accused Peter of abandoning her on Christmas Day 2023 while she held their newborn daughter, just months before more favorable terms in their prenuptial agreement were due to take effect.
Who is Peter Goodwin?
Peter Goodwin grew up in Virginia as the son of billionaire businessman and philanthropist William H Goodwin Jr. He currently resides in Charlottesville, where his family estate is said to be worth $9 million.
Known for his taste for luxury, Peter owns fast cars, Rolex watches and is often spotted enjoying extravagant trips. He married Cara in 2014 and together they welcomed four children.
Peter Goodwin’s Billionaire Father
William H. Goodwin Jr is one of Virginia’s most prominent businessmen who deals in computer leasing, hospitality and real estate investments. His company, Riverstone Group, owns major properties like Richmond’s Jefferson Hotel, Charlottesville’s Keswick Hall and Kiawah Island Golf Resort in South Carolina.
A philanthropist, he donated $250 million in 2021 for medical research alongside tens of millions for education and cancer research. Despite being retired, he still remains active in philanthropy and land development across Virginia.
Business Holdings And Assets
Court filings show Peter holds a 20 percent stake in his family’s investment company, valued at just over $922 million. Combined with other assets, his personal net worth exceeds $1 billion, making him one of Virginia’s wealthiest heirs. No, that’s not all. He has access to private estates, clubs and global travel.
Peter Goodwin’s Nanny Scandal
Court documents allege Peter had an affair with Annette Lombard who began working for the family in 2019 as a babysitter. It was during the pandemic that she moved into the Goodwin home to help with the children.
Peter eventually hired her at his office and promoted her to vice president. After announcing his separation, the two allegedly engaged in “adulterous acts” at destinations including the Four Seasons in Florida, Jackson Hole in Wyoming and the Goodwins’ Palm Beach estate.
Cara Goodwin’s Side Of The Story
Cara, who is a child psychologist and the founder of Parenting Translator, a parenting advice platform, claimed in her filings that Peter informed her of their divorce on Christmas Day 2023 while she held their four-month-old baby, in front of their three older children. She also alleged to have battled mental health challenges during their marriage.
Bitter Texts Between Estranged Couple
According to court documents, Cara texted Peter, “Did your family find out what really happened and that you were lying to them, too?” To which he replied, “I offered you $45 million and a lot of custody for years of marriage. You trounce around your palace with 2 housekeepers and a nanny and still think I owe you more. You can’t even engage in conversation unless it’s 100% what you want.”
He added, “I am far from perfect and have surely made some mistakes. I felt I didn’t like the way you treated me or made me feel. People get divorced because of anger and resentment, not for some one-time thrill. You have no idea how to coparent… instead, you threaten me about the schedule. Disparage me. Restrict my time with the kids… stomp on my boundaries.”
Peter and Cara’s 2014 prenuptial agreement entitled her to $10 million if the marriage ended before 10 years, plus $1 million for each year after, capped at $50 million. By filing in January 2025, just after their 10th anniversary, Peter ensured Cara did not get a larger payout. Despite the agreement, Cara is challenging the terms in court, seeking more assets.
