Real Madrid are closing an era at the end of this season. Among the many changes, Luka Modric, one of the club’s most iconic players, prepares to depart the Spanish capital this summer. The 39-year-old Croatian has delivered his farewell message ahead of what will be his final La Liga appearance in the famous white shirt. One last dance in Madrid Modric will play one last time for ‘Los Blancos’ at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu on May 25, when Real Madrid host Real Sociedad in their closing fixture of the 2024/25 La Liga season. It will mark the end of a 13-year spell at the club that has been nothing short of legendary, filled with 4 La Liga titles, 6 UEFA Champions League trophies and 5 FIFA Club World Cup championships. Once seen as the face of Real Madrid’s policy of renewing players over 30 with one-year contracts, Modric now finds himself on a different path. The club has made it clear that it’s time to turn the page. Modric’s departure is not the only one in Madrid. He’ll be leaving alongside Italian manager Carlo Ancelotti, with Xabi Alonso reportedly waiting to take the reins and oversee a new chapter in Madrid’s history. What’s next for Luka Modric? While his Real Madrid journey is coming to a close, Modric’s career is far from over. The midfield maestro remains determined to captain Croatia at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and is expected to sign a short-term deal elsewhere after this summer’s expanded FIFA Club World Cup. Though he has been linked with a move to the Saudi Pro League, sources suggest Modric would prefer a switch to Major League Soccer (MLS), potentially joining the growing list of European stars heading stateside. Who will replace Modric in Madrid? While incoming manager Xabi Alonso plans to reinforce mainly the defence, speculation over Luka Modric’s long-term successor continues. According to Fichajes.net, Liverpool’s Alexis Mac Allister has been identified as the ideal replacement, despite Liverpool setting a €90 million price tag on the Argentine international. Mac Allister, 26, was one of Liverpool’s key players this season. He made 49 appearances for the Reds, scoring seven goals and providing six assists. Born in Santa Rosa, La Pampa, Mac Allister has been playing in England since 2019, when he was signed by Brighton. Liverpool brought him in 2023 for €42 million. While Mac Allister has already publicly dismissed the idea of leaving Anfield this summer, Real Madrid may begin laying the groundwork for a future move. The transfer of Trent Alexander-Arnold, rumoured to switch to Madrid, may influence future talks between the clubs. Read here more sports news.
