Why Are Hundreds Of F-1 Visas Being Revoked In US And Should Indian Students Be Worried?
@Source: timesnownews.com
The Trump administration has revoked visas of over 300 international students for their alleged involvement in "campus activism" and "engagement with anti-national content" on social media, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed, in what can be seen as the latest crackdown to tighten immigration. Hundreds of students have reportedly received emails from the US Department of State (DOS) informing them that their F-1 visas (student visas) have been revoked and that they should self-deport using the CBP Home App. “On behalf of the United States Department of State, the Bureau of Consular Affairs Visa Office hereby informs you that additional information became available after your visa was issued. As a result, your F-1 visa with expiration date XXXXX was revoked in accordance with Section 221(i) of the United States Immigration and Nationality Act, as amended,” the email as quoted by TOI stated. According to the notification, the Bureau of Consular Affairs Visa Office will alert the Department of Homeland Security’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement, which manages the Student Exchange Visitor Program and is responsible for removal proceedings. They may further notify the designated school official about the revocation of the student's F-1 visa, and he/she will then be asked to self-deport. Moreover, it may also make the student ineligible for a future US visa. “It may also make you ineligible for a future US visa. Please note that deportation can take place at a time that does not allow the person being deported to secure possessions or conclude affairs in the United States. Persons being deported may be sent to countries other than their countries of origin,” it further read. Also Read: Indian Green Card Holders In US To Be Impacted Under Trump's New Proposal? F-1 visas cancelled: Should Indian students be worried? The latest crackdown targets students who the US administration refers to as "Hamas sympathisers" or those engaging in "terrorist activities on US soil". An AI-powered app, “Catch and Revoke” app is being used to detect and cancel the visas of students who were found supporting Hamas or other designated terrorist organisations. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that this crackdown would continue till "each and every lunatic is found". Notably, the US State Department designated Hamas as a foreign terrorist organization in October 1997. “Maybe more; it might be more than 300 at this point. We do it every day. Every time I find one of these lunatics, I take away their visa," US Secretary of State Marco Rubio told reporters at a press conference. Earlier, the Trump administration had deported several students at Columbia and other Universities across the country, including those on green cards, for allegedly engaging in "pro-terrorist, anti-Semitic, anti-American activity".
