Why Did 'Vintage RCB' Trend During IPL Match Against PBKS At M. Chinnaswamy Stadium?
@Source: news18.com
Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) once again faltered in front of their home crowd at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium when they took on Punjab Kings (PBKS) in a rain-curtailed contest on Friday night. With a revised 14-over match, a sea of red roared as Bengaluru-based franchise came in to bat first. Their cheers, however, soon faded, as RCB were quickly reduced to 42/7 in under eight overs. The proceedings instantly brought back the unpleasant memories of Eden Gardens where RCB clocked the infamous 49. Thankfully, Tim David (50 off 26 balls) smashed a counter-attacking half-century to instil some life in the camp as the home side eventually managed 95/9 on the scoreboard. PBKS had no smooth sailing in their run chase as the Shreyas Iyer side were tested by Josh Hazlewood (3/14) who bowled a brilliant spell. But RCB’s target was too little to defend and Nehal Wadhera’s unbeaten 19-ball 33 pushed Punjab over the finish line with 5 wickets and 11 deliveries to spare. Stunned by RCB’s yet another forgettable performance at home, fans on ‘X’ (formerly known as Twitter) trended “Vintage RCB”. But why? Royal Challengers Bangalore, at one stage of their batting, gave the fans stationed at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium and online, a massive scare, when the Rajat Patidar team lost 7 batters for just 42 on the board. Were RCB going to break their own record for the lowest score in IPL history? For the unversed, 2017 marked a dark year for RCB when they took on Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the iconic venue of Eden Gardens. Batting first, KKR could only muster 131. When the IPL fans were convinced it would be a walk in the park for RCB, the Bengaluru-based franchise were skittled for 49, to everybody’s horror. Chinnaswamy Stadium Curse Royal Challengers Bangalore have played seven matches so far in the ongoing season of IPL. They have won four game out of these seven. The three encounters where they ended on the losing side were all in their own backyard – M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. It has become some sort of a legend that RCB are destined to lose when they are playing a home game. Be it the mental block, failure to read the conditions at the Bengaluru stadium or merely a rude coincidence – the curse of M. Chinnaswamy Stadium is yet to lift in IPL 2025 for RCB. The trolling of RCB further continued as fans stumbled upon an unfortunate ad involving the Men in Red. “Whenever RCB crosses 100 runs, get free delivery for the next 30 minutes,” an ad of a grocery app partnered with the RCB read. A batting collapse, low score, Tim David’s heroics, loss in front of home crowd, third consecutive losses at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. The trophy-less franchise faced the brickbats of online fans and trolls among all the chaos that unfolded. “Vintage RCB” quietly became one of the biggest trends on the Indian side of ‘X’ platform on the night. (@RK_rajesh3) April 18, 2025 Fun fact: Tim David’s 50 off 26 balls against Punjab Kings earned him the Player of the Match award, despite RCB being on the losing side. Points Table (So Far) RCB’s three consecutive losses at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, their home turf, aren’t fun for fans to witness but that shouldn’t take away from the fact that Patidar-led XI have eight points secured in their bag and are currently standing fourth in the IPL rankings. For context, the most successful franchises of IPL – Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings – are placed at seven and tenth spot respectively, at the time of writing this. These are subject to change, of course.
