Why Rory McIlroy gave Bryson DeChambeau the silent treatment during historic Masters win

Rory McIlroy gave playing partner Bryson DeChambeau the silent treatment during the final round of the Masters. And now golf fans know why. Reuters reported Tuesday McIlroy had a deliberate strategy to stay laser-focused during perhaps the most important round of his outstanding career. “That didn’t have anything to do with Bryson,” McIlroy’s sports psychologist Bob Rotella told the BBC. “That was just the game plan all week, and we wanted to get lost in it.” “We didn’t want to pay attention to what anyone else was scoring or shooting or swinging or how far they were hitting it. We just wanted Rory to play his game.” McIlroy, 35, said he was ignoring Augusta’s iconic old-school scoreboards throughout the week and it worked. He became the sixth player in history to complete the career grand slam with his incredible win at Augusta National. He made birdie on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff to beat England’s Justin Rose and cap an unforgettable, rollercoaster round that provided some of the best sports drama in years. DeChambeau, who started the final round with visions of winning himself but shot 3-over par to finish fifth, said that McIlroy “didn’t talk to me once.” Rotella added that moving forward fans should see a more relaxed McIlroy now that the weight of the career grand slam is off his shoulders. “My guess is that he will go on and win quite a few more,” Rotella said. “I think he’s thinking of having a multiple-win season.” Northern Ireland’s most famous son has already won three times on the PGA Tour this season, claiming titles at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am in February and at The Players Championship in March before winning the season’s first major. He now has 44 wins as a professional, including 29 on the PGA Tour.
