Why Scottie Scheffler's Historic Assessment Ought to Scare the PGA Tour
@Source: newsweek.com
Scottie Scheffler put on a show during the second round of the 2025 Houston Open, tying his own record for Memorial Park Golf Course with a 62. It was also his lowest score on the PGA Tour since the fourth round of the 2022 World Wide Technology Championship, when he shot the same score.The fact that Scheffler shaved four strokes off his best round of 2025 must have concerned most of his peers. But they are likely to be completely freaked out by the way the World No. 1 judged his performance on the day:"Today was a day where I felt like my ball-striking could have been a bit better and I was able to hole some putts," Scheffler said after his performance. "I hit a lot of greens but I felt like my irons were just barely off, and I felt like I could have been hitting them a little bit closer to the hole, but overall kept it on the green, kept giving myself looks.""The way I was putting, I didn't feel I had to force 'em there by many pins if I wasn't totally comfortable with the shot, so good results."Scheffler's "barely off" iron play allowed him to gain 1,076 strokes on the approach to the green, ranking 30th in the field in that statistic. That was enough for him to reach 17 of the 18 greens in regulation, the second-best performance of the day.It is worth noting that Scheffler was able to reach the greens so well despite his driver not being at its best. He only averaged 281 yards (138th in the field), with a longest drive of only 316 yards.However, as he said, his real strength was in putting, where he finished second best among his peers with 3,727 strokes gained during the round. He needed only 1.59 putts per greens in regulations, ranked 17th in the field.Such a critical assessment of such an outstanding round speaks to the confidence Scheffler is gaining in his game, which is undoubtedly bad news for his peers just two weeks before the Masters. After all, if he can shoot a 62 when he's not feeling at the top of his game, who knows what he can do when he is.Scottie Scheffler's performance in the second round of the Houston Open included eight birdies and no bogeys. The 28-year-old has played bogey-free the first 36 holes at Memorial Park, something he hadn't done since the American Express in 2023, according to golf statistician Justin Ray.Before Friday, Scheffler had two rounds of 66 as his bests of the season, the second round of the Phoenix Open and the fourth round of the Genesis Invitational.More Golf: How Michael Jordan's Gambling Helped Justin Thomas Buy His First Car
