Tesla is currently unable to launch its Robotaxi service in California due to a lack of required permits from state regulators.
The company has engaged in multiple discussions with the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) regarding the expansion of its autonomous services.
Despite Elon Musk's promotion of Robotaxis, Tesla has been warned by the DMV and another oversight body against an unauthorised rollout in the Bay Area.
Tesla's senior counsel has acknowledged the need for additional permits for both drivered and driverless autonomous rideshare operations in California.
Critics, including a California Assembly member, accuse Tesla of attempting to bypass regulations, while the company states it is taking a phased approach to its ride-hailing service.
