The Board of Control for Cricket in India BCCI following its Apex Council meeting in Kolkata yesterday stated that the coastal city of Visakhapatnam is the top contender to host the inaugural match of the ICC Womens World Cup 2025 scheduled to take place in India in September this year.
While the news was met with much enthusiasm and fervour some cricket fans on social media sites like X were left wondering about the choice. Given the high-stakes global lens on the match along with the fact that cities like Mumbai and Vadodara recently hosted the Womenrsquos Premier League WPL many questioned the traditional shift of venue.
Weather Considerations Influence Venue Selection
The September- October tournament window clashed with Mumbai and Vadodararsquos monsoon season which typically brings heavy rains until early October. As such sources reveal these cities were ruled out to avoid weather disruptions as an overlap with the World Cup schedule posed a risk of weather disruptions.
Prioritizing uninterrupted play the BCCI opted for venues with more favorable climatic conditions during this period.
Visakhapatnams Cricketing Infrastructure and Experience
Visakhapatnam has emerged as a prominent cricketing hub in recent years. The Dr YS Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium established in 2003 has hosted numerous international matches including Tests One-Day-Internationals ODIs and Indian Premier League IPL fixtures.
Renowned for its state-of-the-art facilities and excellent drainage system the stadium ensures minimal delays even during unexpected showers.
Favorable October Climate in Visakhapatnam
October in Visakhapatnam offers conducive weather for cricket. Average daytime temperatures hover around 30 degrees Celsius with nighttime temperatures around 26 Celsius. The city experiences approximately 12 rainy days in October indicating a relatively low probability of match disruptions due to rain.
Strategic Venue Distribution Across India
The BCCI is also in discussions to distribute World Cup matches across five venues aiming to manage weather risks and streamline logistics.
While Visakhapatnam is set for the opener discussions are ongoing regarding the final match with Indore and Guwahati emerging as potential hosts. Both cities have demonstrated their capability to host significant cricket fixtures furthering the BCCIs objective of promoting the sport across diverse regions.
By selecting Visakhapatnam over traditional venues like Mumbai and Ahmedabad the BCCI is also taking the broader promotion of cricket nationwide ahead.
