He might not have broken Brian Lara’s record, but South African all-rounder Wiaan Mulder became the first player in the history of the sport to score more than 350 runs and pick a wicket in a Test. Mulder achieved the unique feat against Zimbabwe in the second Test of the ongoing series in Bulawayo. Batting in the first innings as the stand-in captain, he smashed 367 (334) not out, with 49 fours and four sixes. It was the highest-ever score for South African cricket, too, going past Hashim Amla’s 311 from July 2012. The Proteas declared at 626/5 in 114 overs. In the next essay, as South Africa bowled out the African neighbors for just 170, he picked up two wickets, getting captain Craig Ervine out for 17 (30) before bowling Wessly Madhevere for 25. The previous highest score for a player who picked a wicket in a Test was Sri Lankan legend Sanath Jayasuriya’s 340 against India in 1997. In that Test, he got rid of Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly, and Rajesh Chauhan. The next two in the list are Graham Gooch (333) and Michael Clarke (329*), both against India. For the sub-continent nation, Virender Sehwag has also achieved the feat, with his 319 in Chennai being supplemented by the wickets of Mark Boucher and AB de Villiers. However, he decided against it out of respect. “I thought we had enough and we needed to bowl. Secondly, Brian Lara is a legend. For someone of that stature to keep that record is deserved. If I get the chance to do it again, I’d do it the same way,” Mulder said while speaking after the day’s play. South Africa asked Zimbabwe to follow on and they ended the day at 51/1.
