Will Smith Teases ‘Hancock’ Sequel, Says Zendaya Will Be Approached for a Role

Will Smith might be returning to another one of his past roles.
While appearing on xQc’s live stream on Twitch, Smith answered some fan questions when one asked about the possibility of another Hancock film. The 2008 superhero movie directed by Peter Berg starred Smith as Hancock, an alcoholic superhero who tries to revitalize his public image and help the city of Los Angeles after he saves the life of a PR executive (Jason Bateman) and meets the exec’s wife (Charlize Theron).
When asked about a sequel, Smith joked, “They be leaking all my information.”
The actor teased, “There’s a really cool, really cool Hancock 2 idea. We haven’t even talked about it, so I’m going to give you on little piece — Zendaya will be being approached for Hancock 2, for a role in Hancock 2.”
Smith’s comments are not the first time a potential sequel has been hinted at. In a 2012 interview, Berg confirmed that he intended on making a sequel to the film.
“We’ve been talking about the sequel between us, Will Smith, [producers] Michael Mann and Akiva Goldman and myself. We’re all interested, but we literally just have trouble getting into the same room at the same time. We did have a series of meetings last year and started to hash out an idea for sequel — and Will Smith actually had the idea — so I think it will happen, it’s just a question of timing,” he said at the time.
Meanwhile, Theron confirmed that should a sequel ever happen, she would star “in a heartbeat.”
“You know, for a while we [talked about a sequel],” Theron told ComicBook.com. “I think closer to when the movie came out, but not in recent years, no. We’ll be superheroes with our walkers, you know. And I’ll still go.”
Hancock would not be the only film in Smith’s catalog that would be revisited. The actor recently starred in 2024’s Bad Boys: Ride or Die and it was announced in March 2022 that there will be a sequel to I Am Legend that will also star Michael B. Jordan.
The 2007 post-apocalyptic film will be written by the original film’s co-writer Akiva Goldsman for Warner Bros. Though the film ended with the death of Smith’s scientist character, who attempted to find a cure for a plague that killed most of humanity and turned survivors into monstrous creatures, it’s unclear how he might return for the sequel.
But Smith teased of the film, “There’s a scope of understanding that Michael B. Jordan has that everybody doesn’t have. He’s a rare one.”
