Willum Willumsson responds after Chris Davies addressed Birmingham City star’s form

Willum Willumsson’s first season at Birmingham City can almost be split into two parts: pre-injury and post-injury. The Iceland international was one of Blues’ leading lights in the first half of the season before suffering an innocuous injury as a substitute in the 2-1 win over Lincoln City in the FA Cup third round on January 11. Willumsson didn’t recover until Blues played Newcastle United in the fourth round four weeks later and he has looked a shadow of his former self. Including that Lincoln game, Willumsson has failed to record a goal or an assist in his last 13 matches for Blues. In his first 25 appearances for the club, ex-Go Ahead Eagles midfielder Willumsson scored six and assisted eight. Addressing Willumsson’s form before Blues’ thumping 4-1 win over Shrewsbury on Saturday, manager Chris Davies said: “He had a bit of an injury and then he came back, and you get thrown into games quite quickly, and you don’t get that training time to build up so I think that might have contributed to some of his performances, not being bad but not being at the heights that they were. “The reason I’ve picked him in a lot of games is because of the trust I have in him and I know what he can bring to the team in terms of his technique with the ball and how he positions himself to be creative. “I think Willum will be keen to recapture some of that early form and I would back him to do that.” Davies kept faith with Willumsson for the Shrewsbury game and he was rewarded with arguably the 26-year-old’s best performance in three months. Willumsson was willing to run beyond Jay Stansfield in the first half, occasionally varying up his game by coming short to collect the ball, and he should have made his first assist since New Year’s Day. Willumsson put one on a plate for Kieran Dowell but the on-loan Rangers man blazed over the bar when it was easier to score. The question mark over Willumsson isn’t his ability, though, it’s whether he can perform to his level every three or four days. By his own admission, he didn’t have to do that when he played in the Netherlands. Willumsson must learn how to do that because even though Blues’ fixture list will be a little kinder next season, there will still be 50-55 games to grind through when they're a Championship club.
