THE resident of a house hit by a light aircraft before it exploded, said she was lucky to be alive after debris rained down on the spot where she had been sunbathing minutes earlier.
The Bristell NG5 aircraft lost power, clipped a roof and careered through hedges and a fence, before landing in Whitecliff Bay Holiday Park, Bembridge, at around 2pm yesterday (Saturday).

A householder, who lives beside the holiday park, wishing only to be known as Tina, had just gone back inside her property when the incident occurred.
She said she was "lucky" to be inside, as she had been sunbathing in her rear garden only 20 minutes earlier.

The crash destroyed one of her chimneys and left two gaping holes in her roof, and other damage to property.
Rubble rained down onto both sides of her house, including the spot where Tina was sunbathing.

Tina, who lives on Hillway, said: "I was in my living room doing some email admin then suddenly there was this massive, loud noise.”
"It reminded me of many years ago, when it snowed heavily and a bus came down the hill, twisted and turned, and smashed into my front wall."

When Tina went outside her front door to investigate, she found large chunks of her chimney, not knowing what caused it.
It was only when a neighbour came running through her gate to check if she was alright, that she was told he had seen the light aircraft hit her roof.

"What was most amazing, was from the time it collided into the chimney, and for me going round to the back of the house — all within the space of two minutes — there was a loud explosion, with a shockwave.
"This was terrifying. Suddenly there were huge plumes of smoke and flames.”

The crash left debris scattered across the garden, with parts of the aircraft and bricks from the roof littering the area.
The hedges and fence were also completely destroyed in the crash.
The pilot came round later to apologise to her for causing damage, explaining his engine had cut out, possibly due to hitting a bird.
"What a lovely man, to be worried about the damage to the house, when he was so lucky to be alive,“ said Tina.
