Women's Six Nations: Ireland simply superb, something's brewing - One F in Foley
@Source: irishmirror.ie
Eight tries and a defensive masterclass in Parma , rarely has Ireland's women's rugby put in such a coherent display in an away game in the Six Nations.
There were four first-half tries from the outside backs in the 54-12 win over Italy, Aoife Dalton scoring with less than a minute on the clock, Anna McGann crossing twice and Amee Lee Costigan also getting over yet that is to miss out mention of Eve Higgins' terrific contribution from no12.
This team's defence though is also a thing of wonder with the front-row adding the kind of tackling numbers that are unprecedented, virtually acting as an auxiliary back-row.
Niamh O'Dowd, Neve Jones and Linda Djougang made 51 tackles, missing just four, collectively through their 57, 61 and 58 minutes respective playing time.
That's not to say this Ireland back-row isn't a burning rocket-fuelled unit, the return of Edel McMahon to take the captaincy, the athleticism of Erin King and barging, charging Aoife Wafer being the starting unit.
But Brittany Hogan and Dorothy Wall were as sensational when they came in - coach Scott Bemand has a five-into-three problem to figure out.
Ireland turned 28-5 ahead at the break and would score another quartet of tries in the second-half, the match ending up as a record win in Italy.
Djougang powered over, Hogan and Wall who had both started on the bench showed their physicality in getting across the line, while McGann completed her hat-trick just at the close.
Those who thought 21 year-old Aoife Dalton had her best game in an Ireland shirt last week will have had to readjust as she picked up the Player of the The Match award.
"We came here on the back of last week where we knew we left a lot out there, our execution really let us down a lot," said Dalton.
"So to come out here and score 50 points today was just huge for us. There was so much went into it because we knew we weren't good enough last week.
"Italy are a fantastic side, they came to Ireland last year and beat us so we knew the challenge we were facing this week.
"I don't think I'm the star of the backline though, look at the brilliant 'Sevens' girls (McGann, Costigan, Flood), I will go back and share this award with them, it was a fabulous team performance all around.
"We will celebrate this win here in the dressing room but we have our second home game, against England in two weeks time (April 12), and we can't wait to be home again in Cork."
