MEDINA, Ohio – Thanks to a grant from the Environmental Protection Agency, the track at Medina High School will undergo some improvements this summer.
“That project is going to start May 27 and we are very excited about it,” said Ryan O’Cull, director of business affairs for Medina City Schools. “The first three weeks we will be tearing off the old material and grinding the track surface. Once we lay the new surface, we will need that to sit for a good three weeks so that we get a good adhesion on that. Conservatively, it will be a 12-week project.”
Board member Jeanne Pritchard asked what the football, rugby and lacrosse teams would do during the project when they need to use the field.
O’Cull said that during the initial phases of the track project, the teams could likely still use the turf field, but added that when the new layer of track surface goes on, they will need to find alternative places to practice for a few weeks.
“I will be in communication with the coaches about that,” O’Cull said. “We do have plenty of other fields around the high school they can use during that time. We will also be replacing all of the fencing around the track and all of the poles will be painted so it will look like a brand new facility when we are done.”
Superintendent Aaron Sable commended O’Cull on obtaining the EPA grant which will cover $300,000 of the cost to replace the track surface. He added that the balance of the project will be covered through sales tax funds and will not come out of the district’s general operations budget.
