WRU set to offer Steve Tandy the Wales head coach job as duo lined up to lead summer tour
@Source: walesonline.co.uk
The Welsh Rugby Union are set to offer Steve Tandy the opportunity of becoming Wales' new head coach. WalesOnline exclusively reported last week Tandy was the front runner for the job with Simon Easterby and Franco Smith also shortlisted, but we have now learnt the Scotland defence coach is set to be offered the job as Warren Gatland's long-term successor. But WalesOnline understands Tandy is unlikely to be in place for this summer's tour of Japan with Cardiff boss Matt Sherratt and Harlequins head coach Danny Wilson expected to take the lead on an interim basis for the two-Test tour in July. Tandy was head coach of the Ospreys between 2012 and 2018 before moving to Australia to take charge of the Waratahs' defence. After impressing in Sydney, Tandy took on the same role with Scotland in 2019 where he has been a resounding success, turning their defence into one of the meanest in the international game. The 45-year-old was also a member of Gatland's backroom team on the 2021 British & Irish Lions tour of South Africa. If he accepts the WRU's offer of becoming its new head coach he is expected to move for Sherratt as attack coach while Wilson and Ospreys assistant Duncan Jones are leading candidates to take charge of the forwards. The WRU are also keen for Adam Jones to become permanent scrum coach, a role he held during the Six Nations on secondment from Harlequins. Turning around Welsh rugby's fortunes will be no easy task with the national side having gone a record 17 Test matches without a victory, which includes back-to-back wooden spoons. As part of the WRU's "One Wales" strategy the aim is for Wales to be ranked in the top five in the world in the long-run while they are also hopeful of turning around the fortunes of its four professional clubs - Cardiff, Dragons, Ospreys and Scarlets . But the summer tour of Japan is the first priority and if the WRU cannot get Tandy out of his current contract by that time the expectation is they will turn to Sherratt and Wilson. Wilson is a former Wales U20s head coach who has held coaching roles at the Dragons and Scarlets before taking the helm as the main man at Cardiff and helping the capital city club win the Challenge Cup in 2019. Since then he has been involved with Scotland and Glasgow Warriors, while he is currently head coach of English giants Harlequins. The WRU are also expected to formally announce the appointment of former FA bigwig Dave Reddin as its new director of rugby over the next few days.
