After opening the season as one of the best teams in the American League, the New York Yankees have endured a brutal skid in the standings and are now clinging onto the final wild card spot as the playoffs approach.Injuries have played a big part in the team's demise, but so have poor defense, questionable baserunning and odd pitching changes late in games. Those types of problems have put a harsh spotlight on manager Aaron Boone, who could be on his way out if the Yankees can't right the ship soon.But who would the Yankees bring in to replace Boone, after he has reached the postseason in six of his seven seasons as the skipper?The list of potential options to replace Boone is long and wouldn't really be clear until the Yankees decide to make such a move. But it could include a reunion with a former Yankees catcher who has already had a turn managing the team."One of the strong contenders is Joe Girardi," Adda E. Lavalle Lara wrote for Al Bat. "With a winning history in the Bronx, Girardi led the Yankees to their last title in 2009. Although his bullpen management was criticized during his time with the Philadelphia Phillies, his experience and knowledge of the New York market could be just what the team needs to get back on track."Girardi was removed from his role with the Yankees after his early success devolved into some harsh performances, but it could be time to revisit the positives he brought to the role. As the Yankees fall short of expectations, Boone is often criticized for being too rosy and too defensive of his players in public comments.
