FROM karate to kick-boxing, and padel to petanque, around a dozen sports are to be part of the Liberation Games. Aimed at final-year pupils from all Island primary schools, the four-day event forms part of the build-up to the 80th anniversary of Jersey’s Liberation on 9 May 1945. Organised by the Bailiff’s Chambers and sponsored by Butterfield, the Liberation Games begin on Tuesday and will be staged at a range of venues including FB Fields, Springfield Stadium and Les Quennevais Sports Centre. Other sports which will be included are squash, cricket, rugby, football, cycling and netball. The Bailiff, Sir Timothy Le Cocq said: “The Liberation Games aim to celebrate Jersey’s proud heritage, sense of community, and love of sport by offering children the opportunity to connect with their peers and try out a wide range of sporting activities in a spirit of fun, friendship, and Island pride.” Michelle le Blond, branch manager at Butterfield’s Jersey office, added: “We are pleased to be able to support the Liberation celebrations and contribute to the wider community. “We hope all the participants enjoy the different sporting activities and look forward to welcoming our mascot Vern to help cheer everyone on.”
