After a lapse of three years Minister for Women Sashi Kiran yesterday confirmed that the Youth Parliament will be held this year.
The last Youth Parliament was held in 2022.
Ms Kiran revealed this during the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) panel discussion on Women’s Political Participation, at the University of the South Pacific yesterday.
“The Youth Parliament will be held this year to help build the confidence of young people, in leadership roles,” Ms Kiran said.
The dates for the event will be announced by the Speaker, Filimone Jitoko.
“It is important for youths to participate in school elections to gain the exposure and experience needed for future political roles,” Ms Kiran said.
She added many women from the previous Mock Parliament had indicated their interest in running for local government elections.
Ms Kiran expressed hope that the upcoming review of electoral laws will encourage more women to enter politics.
“Hopefully, the review of the electoral laws will encourage more women in politics,” she said.
“Another initiative to support women in leadership roles is the Women’s Leadership programme.”
Ms Kiran acknowledged cyberbullying as one of the biggest barriers for women in politics.
‘’One of the biggest challenges women worry about is cyberbullying. Despite government’s efforts to address this, it remains a reality for many young women.
“Events like the Youth Parliament and last year’s Women’s Apprentice Parliament could inspire young people to see themselves in that space.’’
