A Zimbabwean football match has had to be abandoned after violence led to the stabbing of at least one fan.
The Central Region Soccer League match between Shabanie Mine and Gwanda Pirates at Maglas Stadium saw violent clashes between fans in the stands.
As a result, a Shabanie fan was reportedly knifed in the neck.
The match was called off in the 68th minute.
There are also reports that a Gwanda player may have fired shots into the air to disperse rioters. Shabanie fans allegedly responded by throwing rocks at the Gwanda players.
In a statement, the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA), which runs the league, expressed ‘its deepest regret and condemnation of the violent attack’.
ZIFA said it takes the matter with the utmost seriousness and has already instituted a full and independent investigation to determine the circumstances leading to this attack.
In parallel, they are initiating the following immediate corrective measures:
A comprehensive review and overhaul of our match-day security protocols, includingthe deployment, training, and coordination of stewards and security personnel.Tightened access control and screening procedures at all sanctioned matches to prevent the entry of weapons or other dangerous items.Enforced crowd control measures, including the separation of rival supporters at fixtures deemed high-risk.
“Disciplinary measures will be taken against any individuals or entities found to have contributed to or failed to prevent this regrettable incident,” Zifa added.
