'2025 has presented many hurdles' - Top sprinter withdraws from US Championships

In an unexpected turn out of situation, a top American sprinter has withdrawn from the US Championships a day before the start of the highly anticipated meet. Former world champion Fred Kerley has withdrawn from competing at the US Championships and ultimately will not be part of the American team to the World Championships in Tokyo this September. In a statement released on his social media platforms, the Paris Olympics 100m bronze medallist revealed his struggles this season and will need some time off. "The 100m should be a straight sprint. 2025 has presented many hurdles. Taking some time out to get back on track. No USATF Champs this year. Thanks to all my supporters," he wrote. Kerley was registered to compete in the 100m at the US Championships, where he was classified as one of the top favourites to get one of the three secured spots on the American team to Tokyo. Sadly, he has had a troubled year on and off track, highlighted by appearing in global sports headlines regarding criminal activities. In May, before the Grand Slam Track in Miami, he was arrested for a battery charge following an alleged altercation with his ex-girlfriend, fellow Olympian Alaysha Johnson, to which he later on pleaded not guilty. The incident, which reportedly occurred on May 1 at a hotel in Dania Beach, Florida, further complicated his athletic career and public image. Kerley's last race was at the Rome Diamond League on June 6, where he ran 10.06s to finish fifth, in a race won by fellow American Trayvon Bromell in 9.84s. His absence at this year's US Championships leaves one more room for an athlete to step up and secure one of the top three spots, as Noah Lyles will only compete in the 200m due to having a bye in the 100m as the reigning world champion.
