Over 100 policemen from Pakistan’s Punjab have reportedly been dismissed from service after refusing to perform their assigned security duties for the ongoing ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
According to a report by the Press Trust of India (PTI), over 100 officials were dismissed after being absent from duty on several occasions while others refused to perform their assigned tasks during the marquee ICC tournament.
“The police officials were assigned to provide security for teams travelling between Qaddafi Stadium Lahore and designated hotels but either remained absent or outright refused to take up their responsibilities,” he said.
The report also revealed that the IGP Punjab Usman Anwar has taken notice of the issue and has asked for strict action to be enforced to those in question.
“There is no room for negligence when it comes to the security of international events,” he said.
It remains unclear as to why police personnel refused to perform their duties with several local reports suggesting that the cops were overburdened due to their additional working hours.
Meanwhile, Federal Information Minister Attaullah Tarar has dismissed reports about a possible terror threat to the Champions Trophy tournament in Pakistan.
In an interview with Geo News on Monday, the minister said: “I would like to state on record that Pakistan is peacefully and very ably hosting the ICC Champions Trophy. Our grounds are full, we have fans from all over the world, the crowds are jubilant, and our streets are filled with people who are celebrating the victory of cricket.”
Despite being the designated hosts, Pakistan has crashed out in the group stages after suffering defeats in their first two games against New Zealand and India respectively.
The Pakistan team will play their final game of the tournament against Bangladesh in Rawalpindi where the Rizwan-led side hopes to end the tournament on a positive note.
The defending champions looked far from their best against both New Zealand and India as they were hammered by both teams in convincing fashion and their exit was confirmed once the Kiwis got the win over Bangladesh.
It remains to be seen if Pakistan cricket will see any changes to ensure that the cricketing nation gets back on its feet.
