Nicholas John Roske, 29, of Simi Valley, California, pleaded guilty Tuesday to attempting to assassinate sitting U.S. Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, CNN reported. U.S. District Judge Deborah L. Boardman on Tuesday scheduled sentencing for October 3. Roske faces up to life in federal prison, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office, District of Maryland. Federal authorities say Roske flew from Los Angeles to Dulles International Airport in Virginia on June 7, 2022. Inside of a checked luggage bag contained several items including a tactical knife, a Glock 17 pistol with two magazines and ammunition, pepper spray, zip ties, a hammer, screwdriver, nail punch, crowbar, pistol lighter, duct tape, among other items, according to the complaint accessed online that was filed with the District Court in Maryland. Kavanaugh’s name does not appear in the news release, nor does his name appear in the complaint filed in June 2022. He is referred to as “a current Justice of the United States Supreme Court.” Media outlets including CNN, The Washington Post, The New York Times, USA Today and more identify the Justice as Kavanaugh. After arriving in Virginia, Roske took a taxi to “the Maryland home of a Supreme Court Justice,” intending to kill the Justice over frustrations with a leaked draft decision on abortion and the school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, the release said. The complaint says Roske believed “the Justice he intended to kill would side with Second Amendment decisions that would loosen gun control laws.” Around 1:05 a.m. June 8, two deputy U.S. Marshals saw Roske arriving in front of the home dressed in black and carrying a suitcase and backpack, the release said. Deputies followed him as he began walking down the street, the complaint says. Shortly after, Roske called 911 and confessed to having homicidal and suicidal thoughts and admitted to traveling to Kavanaugh’s home to kill him, NYT reported. Montgomery County police officers responded and arrested Roske, the release said. “This calculated attempt on the life of a sitting U.S. Supreme Court Justice was a heinous attack on the Court itself,” Attorney General Pamela Bondi said. “Anyone who thinks they can use violence or intimidation to influence our courts will be met with the full force of the law.” Kaylee Remington is a trending news and metro reporter for cleveland.com and The Plain Dealer.
