2025 Champions Trophy: Rohit Sharma eyes MS Dhoni's record in final
@Source: newsbytesapp.com
Indian skipper Rohit Sharma is on the brink of history as the first captain to lead a team in all four ICC events. Under his leadership, India reached the finals of the 2023 World Test Championship, the 2023 ODI World Cup, and the 2024 T20 World Cup. Now, he has another opportunity to extend this remarkable feat when India face New Zealand in the 2025 Champions Trophy final at Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Sunday. Here are further details. In the final match against New Zealand, Rohit can match MS Dhoni's elite captaincy record. If India win on Sunday, he will become only the second skipper worldwide to win ICC titles in both ODI and T20I formats. Notably, this would also put him in the league of legendary captains like Clive Lloyd, Kapil Dev, Allan Border, Imran Khan, Arjuna Ranatunga, and Steve Waugh, among others, who led their teams to ICC ODI trophy victories. Rohit has already guided India to a T20 World Cup title win in 2024 and now has the opportunity to add a 50-over ICC title. So far, only five captains have won multiple ICC titles: Lloyd, Ponting, Dhoni, Daren Sammy, and Pat Cummins. If Rohit leads India to victory on Sunday, he will become a part of this exclusive club of successful captains. A win in Sunday's match would also make Rohit and Virat Kohli the first Indian players to win four ICC titles. They would surpass an elite group of players like Dhoni, Yuvraj Singh, Harbhajan Singh, and Virender Sehwag, who have won three ICC titles. Till now, 17 captains have won an ICC ODI trophy, while eight captains have won an ICC T20 trophy, with only Dhoni holding both 50-over and 20-over ICC titles. Dhoni led India in 200 ODIs from 2007 to 2018, securing 110 wins, 74 losses, five ties, and 11 no-results, with a 55% win percentage. Meanwhile, Rohit has captained in 55 ODIs, recording 41 wins, 12 losses, one tie, and one no-result. He boasts a 74.54% win percentage. According to ESPNcricinfo, as skipper, Dhoni scored 6,641 runs at 53.55 (six tons, 47 fifties), while Rohit has 2,430 runs at 51.70, with five centuries and 16 fifties.
