In a harrowing Mayday call, the pilot of the ill-fated Air India flight from Ahmedabad alerted air traffic control just moments before the plane crashed into a doctors' hostel, resulting in hundreds of deaths. Captain Sumeet Sabharwal, an experienced pilot with over 8,200 hours of flying time, issued a dire warning in his last communication: "Mayday [...] no thrust, losing power, unable to lift," he broadcasted urgently. Despite his extensive experience, Captain Sabharwal was powerless to avert the catastrophe that followed. The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, bound for London Gatwick, had barely ascended a few hundred feet when it seemed to lose all power. The pilots struggled valiantly with the controls for a tense 17 seconds before the aircraft crashed into structures below. The crash has caused immense destruction, with authorities confirming a death toll exceeding 290. Upon impact, the aircraft erupted into flames, claiming the lives of nearly all passengers and crew, as well as several individuals on the ground, reports the Express. Miraculously, one survivor was found amidst the wreckage - a 40 year old British father named Vishwash Kumar Ramesh. Air India announced late Thursday that out of the 242 individuals on board - comprising 232 passengers and 10 crew members - only one person survived the tragic incident. As the names of those who perished began to be released, the extent of the tragedy became clear, with numerous British nationals, 169 Indian citizens, a Canadian, and seven Portuguese travellers among the victims. The aircraft abruptly lost communication with air traffic control seconds post take-off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. Flightradar, the flight tracking website, disclosed the final signal of the aircraft occurred less than a minute into its journey, peaking at an altitude of only 625ft. Shocking CCTV footage captured the tragic take-off of the jet, which quickly turned into a catastrophic descent that culminated in a massive explosion. Amongst the British casualties was a family hailing from Gloucester, which included 36 year old recruitment consultant Akeel Nanabawa, his spouse Hannaa, aged 30, and their young daughter Sara, who was just four years old. A message from the Gloucester Muslim Community expressed immense sorrow: "We are profoundly heartbroken by the devastating loss of life. During this moment of overwhelming sorrow, our hearts go out to all those left behind." Additional fatalities were Raxa Modha, a 55 year old resident of Wellingborough, Northants, along with her two year old grandson, Rudra. Wellingborough's mayor, Raj Mishra, honoured their memory, stating: "May their memories be a blessing, and may we come together to support one another in this time of grief."
