3 Key PGA Tour Takeaways From Netflix Full Swing Season 3
@Source: newsweek.com
Netflix's Full Swing released its third season at the end of February.The seven-episode docuseries followed some of the biggest names on the PGA Tour throughout the past year. Cameras captured plenty of the biggest stories in professional golf.Fans watched moments featuring Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy, Shane Lowry, Ludvig Åberg, Justin Rose, Min Woo Lee, Sahith Theegala, Keegan Bradley, Gary Woodland and many more on the PGA Tour.These players were busy in 2024, which meant golf was too.I have been a fan of Full Swing since its release in 2023, and I could not wait for this release.However, this season was disappointing. It was an enjoyable watch, but at the same time, it was not up to the standard I expected.Nevertheless, here are the three key takeaways from Season 3 of Full Swing.3. Shane Lowry and Rory McIlroy's friendship set the tone for heartfelt storylinesOne of the things Netflix got right in Season 3 was the heartfelt storylines. The final two episodes were perfect examples.Justin Rose got emotional during his battle at The Open, tearing up.He is a fan favorite, so seeing this side of him at the Open was interesting. Golf is such a mental game, and his ability to express what he went through was one of the better moments of the series.It reminded fans, especially those who have been fans for a while, just how talented Rose is.Gary Woodland's journey, as well, brought out the wet works. His experience battling a brain tumor was interesting because so much of that happened away from the course. Full Swing did an excellent job informing viewers of the journey that happened away form the golf course.Camillo Villegas provided another storyline that was compelling. He and his wife told their story about Mia, their daughter, who they lost to brain and spine cancer. That story also had me in tears.Suffice it to say, this season was highly emotional.That same episode also featured Keegan Bradley coming full circle at the Presidents Cup. After the way Season 2 of Full Swing ended for him, it was a good way to see him help the Americans win.Those are moments fans appreciate from Full Swing.But the episode that featured the inner-workings of Lowry and McIlroy's friendship was also fascinating. It is admirable how much they hang out and lean on each other.Their friendship is genuine, and I loved how they highlighted it in their victory at the PGA Tour's Zurich Classic in New Orleans. Lowry allows Rory to be completely himself, which made me an even bigger fan of both.This episode also provides more insight into Lowry as a player and person. Because of this season, more people will love him.Plenty of moments tugged at the heartstrings, but there was not enough for my taste, but I will credit the production team for what they gave fans.2. Season 3 of Full Swing felt rushed and oddNow for the nitty gritty of the takeaways from Season 3. Throughout the series, I was baffled.Why are there only seven episodes? The previous two seasons featured eight, and after watching the third season for a second time, I felt like stuff was left on the table.The way they set up interviews with Pro Shop's Dan Rapaport and other golf-related people sometimes felt too staged.The entire Neal Shipley part felt staged at times. He provided a big moment for the Masters, so he deserved a spot in the show, but why not highlight him and other youngsters like Luke Clanton? There are plenty of young players surrounding and on the PGA Tour that could have given the crew more content to use.Another thing that felt off was the amount of minor appearances that did not need to be in the season. During the second episode, "Through Thick and Thin," the cameras were in the car with Matt and Alex Fitzpatrick. They said something about the event and playing together, but we, as fans, never saw them again.Joel Dahman's couple of scenes were also not enough. I understand he did not have nearly as good of a season, but fans eat up Dahmen.That same episode featured the friendship of Adam Hadwin and Nick Taylor, but I feel an entire episode of Lowry and McIlroy would have been more impactful.Another thing is how they bounced back and forth throughout the golf season. One moment, it was Masters week, the next, Valhalla, and then the Players and Tour Championship. It hopped all over the place, making me confused at times.Some kind of consistency would have been nice.The Presidents Cup is a massive deal, but the production team's decision to end the season there was a choice. It made the season feel like it was left on a cliffhanger. Even though I loved what Bradley said about the 2025 Ryder Cup, it was just random to have it there and then end the season.Maybe they are trying to tease for Season 4, but the ending felt rushed and unfinished.1. Xander Schauffele's absence was very noticeableWhen Full Swing released its trailer for this season, Xander Schauffele did not have a role in it.He did not sit down and speak to the cameras at all in Season 3 despite being one of the biggest stories of 2024. The 31-year-old has never participated with the docuseries, but when he wins the PGA Championship at Valhalla and the Open at Royal Troon, one would think he must be in the show.After all, he was considered maybe the best player on Tour without a major title. Then he broke through and won two.There were a few shots of his two victories but nothing of significance. It was pretty obvious that something was missing this season and it was Schauffele.This choice not to work with Netflix is not new. He has avoided cameras when Netflix is around and has done so since they began filming in 2023.It became more prevalent in Season 2 when the coverage focused more on the Ryder Cup.Netflix could access Team Europe's locker room but had little access to Team USA.The streaming network allegedly does not pay the PGA Tour players to participate, which could explain his absence. He and Patrick Cantlay were two players who publicly spoke about getting paid for participating in the Ryder Cups.Deciding not to participate is a personal choice and something to understand, but it made the season less entertaining.Bryson DeChambeau was also not in the show, but they still highlighted his victory at Pinehurst for his second U.S. Open. The LIV Golf captain was in contention at Valhalla and created one of the best moments in 2024 when he celebrated his birdie putt to force Schauffele's hand.Even though he did not sit down for an interview, his story was still told.The lack of those storylines was a massive loss for the show. It felt like a whole episode was missing, and perhaps it was since Schauffele was such a prominent figure in 2024 for the PGA Tour.What did you think of Season 3 of Full Swing?
