A tragic loss: Bay Village mourns the loss of sophmore Dylan Veselic following injuries sustained during lacrosse match

BAY VILLAGE, Ohio - The Bay Village community is reeling from the tragic loss of sophomore Dylan Veselic, who passed away after sustaining a severe head injury during a lacrosse match.
The sudden and unexpected nature of his death has left family, friends, and classmates in shock, as they come to terms with the profound impact of his absence.
A statement Thursday morning read, “With heavy hearts, the Veselic family shared the news that Dylan has passed away from injuries suffered during a lacrosse game.”
“We are deeply touched by the overwhelming support and kindness shown by our community and beyond. We ask that you continue to keep us in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”
The Bay Village Rockets lacrosse team took on Olmsted Falls Tuesday night, May 6, and according to reports Veselic was struck by the ball at the base of his neck, just below the helmet. Veselic was taken by EMS to a local hospital and shortly after life-flighted to a downtown hospital.
Superintendent of Bay Village City Schools, Scot Prebles wrote, “It is with deep sadness that I share the news of a tragic loss within our school community, the passing of Bay High School sophomore Dylan Veselic.”
Superintendent Prebles’ statement went on to say, “Dylan was a dedicated student and athlete, and we are heartbroken by this loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with Dylan’s family and friends during this time. Counseling services are available at Bay High School for students, staff and family who need support.”
The Bay Rockets Thursday night lacrosse match against Keystone has been cancelled.
Athletic Director Matt Spellman and the Bay High School Athletic Department wrote, “The Bay Athletic Department, along with the Boys Lacrosse and Boys Soccer teams and their coaches, are also incredibly grateful for the overwhelming support shown by surrounding teams, athletic departments, and communities.”
Spellman goes on to say, “Dylan was an amazing student, always wearing a smile on his face while supporting his fellow teammates. He was kind, hardworking, and dedicated, consistently showing leadership, empathy, and a positive attitude both on the field and in the classroom.”
“Dylan’s enthusiasm, determination, and willingness to help others made him a role model for his peers.”
“Please continue to keep the Veselic family, Dylan’s teammates, and all who loved and supported him in your thoughts and prayers.”
A prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. at St. Raphael Catholic Church, 525 Dover Center Rd. in Bay Village.
