The New York Giants' interest in quarterback Aaron Rodgers appears to be mutual.
After failing to lure Matthew Stafford, who decided to stay with the Los Angeles Rams, reports emerged Friday afternoon that the Giants would be focusing their attention on Rodgers, who happens to have already made his interest known to the Giants.
“Aaron Rodgers has had some calls — I’m not saying him specifically -- but there have been calls on his behalf made to teams who could have potential interest to gauge that potential interest,“ CBS NFL insider Jonathan Jones said on CBS Sports HQ on Friday. “The New York Giants are a team that received multiple calls. Might he potentially go to the Giants? I suppose that’s a possibility, but I don’t think we’re anywhere close to that being a fait accompli. ...
“Aaron Rodgers is a name that you will hear, and there has certainly been interest on Aaron Rodgers' side.”
According to Connor Hughes of SNY, the Giants and members of the coaching staff have also talked to former members of the Jets coaching staff to discuss their experiences working with Rodgers over the last two years. The Jets will be splitting from Rodgers before the start of the season.
“They received rave reviews,” Hughes wrote on X. ”Public perception of Aaron Rodgers the person, teammate very different from those who worked with him."
In 17 games last season, Rodgers went 5-12. He completed 63% of his passes for 3,897 yards, 28 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.
The Giants were “hellbent” on acquiring Stafford, according to a person who spoke to NJ Advance Media’s Ryan Novozinsky, and even discussed a two-year deal between $90-100 million, per The Athletic’s Dianna Russini. But Stafford’s dalliance around the league ended where he started the offseason: with the Rams.
Giants general manager Joe Schoen told reporters this week that he wants to take a “big swing” at quarterback, which he could also address through the draft and the No. 3 pick.
