Star Indian opener Abhishek Sharma entered his name in the history books on Saturday (April 12) by breaking the record for the highest individual score in the IPL by an Indian batter. The 24-year-old left-handed batter from Punjab came out to open for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL 2025 match played against Punjab Kings at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad and scored 141 runs from 55 balls. During his stay at the crease, he hammered 14 fours and 10 sixes and added 171 runs for the first wicket with Travis Head (66 from 37 balls).
He broke KL Rahul’s record, who during the IPL 2020 match played between Punjab Kings and RCB at Dubai on September 24, 2020, remained unbeaten on 132 runs from 69 balls for the Mohali-based franchise.
The overall record of scoring the highest score in an IPL match is in the name of Chris Gayle. During the IPL 2013 match played between RCB and Pune Warriors India on April 23, 2013, Gayle remained unbeaten on 175 runs from 66 balls.
He is followed by Brendon McCullum, who remained unbeaten on 158 runs from 73 balls for KKR against RCB at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on April 18, 2008, and Quinton de Kock, who scored 140 runs from just 70 balls for Lucknow Super Giants against KKR at Dr DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on May 18, 2022.
